Burnt orange regular round woollie
This is the 100% wool pad backing for use with the Honour Your Flow Fully Compostable menstrual pads. Basically it acts as a waterproof layer which poppers onto the back of the pad. If you've ever used wool nappy wraps you'll know the principle; it's exactly the same. Wool has astounding water repelling qualities, which have been used for thousands of years of course, and it is 100% natural and very breathable. It allows moisture to evaporate from its surface, actually keeping you dryer. If you are sensitive to such things you will notice the difference in how it feels to wear a cloth menstrual pad that is entirely natural. It feels somehow fresher, cleaner. Using a Woollie does make your pad more bulky than pads made with PUL inside for the waterproofing, some women like that feeling, some don't. We make Woollies slightly smaller than the pads, so that there is no risk of the wool coming into contact with your skin while you are wearing it - incase you feel sensitive to wool products on your skin. One of the advantages of this pad system is that you can peek between the cotton pad and the Woollie to see if the pad needs changing. You can change your pad without changing your Woollie unless you feel it is saturated. In tests done (most scientifically in the Honour Your Flow bathroom!) we found that a maxi Fully Compostable organic cotton pad with a Woollie held incredible amounts of water before leaking through the wool - something like 30ml (which is apparently a whole period's worth for some women). Like polyester fleece, wool will leak if you twist or wring it out or squeeze it tightly, otherwise it really stands up to the rigours of pad use! To wash, put your compostable pad in the wash as usual, and simply rinse the Woollie under the tap., maybe using a simple natural soap. If you are very keen you can soak in lanolin water before drying, and this will increase the water repelling properties. Do contact us if you want to know more about that, or if you have any further questions about using wool for your washable menstrual pads.
